New Server install - Do it now and upgrade or wait for 14.04?

    All,

I'm just about to install a new server, switching from Crunchbang. The reason I'm switching is many of the packages I use arent packaged for Debian, so I need an Ubuntu base to get the most out of it.

Anyhow, I wanted to get the server up and running, so I'm trying to determine if I should either:
    > install now on 13.10 and then upgrade to 14.04
    > install the 14.04 beta and then update
    > wait for 14.04

I basically want a clean system without broken packages etc -whats the best plan?

    Thanks guys

If you want the highest stability: Install 13.10 now and do a fresh install of 14.04 in July.
If it's a server where you can accept some hiccups: Install 14.04 now and update daily.

Ah, is 14.04 not out until July then? I thought it was April.

Yes, April, probably around the end of the month.

I've been using 14.04 on a Kubuntu desktop for about two months now. I wouldn't have any qualms building the server with the current daily release of Ubuntu Server and upgrading daily. Most mainstream server software has been in development for many years and is pretty stable by now. The desktop is much less stable in comparison.

Some of us advise waiting two or three weeks until the rush has died down and the servers are not so busy. Some advise waiting a couple of months to allow for any after release adjustments to be made by the developments. The fact is, we get an image for the release and we always need to update after installation to bring in any fixes.

    Regards.

Yes, we have three months of choice where 13.10 is at maximum stability due to age and testing, and 14.04 is at minimum. I would go for the former if your hardware does not have special demands.
