New laptop shipped with 13.10. Should I change to 12.04?

Just got a new (refurbished) laptop that was supposed to ship with 12.04. I got most of my wife's data and programs installed before I realized it has 13.10, and not 12.04. She is concerned with dependablilty and not into the latest innovations. Do I have to worrry about the stability of 13.10 for her use (basic office use), or should I just leave it alone? If 12.04 would be a better bet, can I install it over 13.10 and not loose her data and settings?

13.10 is just as good as 12.04. should not worry about stability issues.

Use 13.10 lts then do a upgrade once 14.04 is finally released at the end of the month. 13.10 is stable but is only supported for 9 months.

Installing Ubuntu over Ubuntu will indeed lose the data and settings. We might get away with it if we were re-installing the same version and using the Something Else option and not formatting the partition. But there is a very big difference between 12.04 and 13.10. Big, big differences in code.

Leave the system in the default state as much as possible and before upgrading deactivate the proprietary video driver if one is being used. Look in System Settings>Software and Updates>Additional Drivers tab.

If it's not broken then why replace it.

13.10 is not lts.

Keep using 13.10 and then when it reaches EOL(End of life) upgrade to 14.04 as suggested by the experienced users too.

Just make sure you upgrade to 14.04 before 13.10 reaches end of life in July.

Wait awhile before installing 14.04. There will almost certainly be a couple months of problems before it really gets stable.
