FTP is outdated --alternate recommended file repository apps, anyone?

I am trying to add an FTP application to my system, but I was recommended to try something a bit more modern for filesharing/storage services. What do you recommend, for an Ubuntu 12.04 LTS server (I'm also using the server for practice on my LPIC)?

I have been using ownCloud on my personal server for the past year now and I am more than happy.

Many features, updated often, active development. +1 for ownCloud from me.
