    Kubuntu on a Compaq Armada 1700 ?

A guy gave me Compaq Armada 1700 laptop that someone had screwewd up by trying to put XP on it. It kinda works but eventually screws up and it's reboot time.
I was thinking of trying to put Kubuntu on it. Or (if there's a difference) Ubuntu 12.04 with the KDE desk top.

Anyone had success with this combo?

    Here:

    I read:

32-MB standard SDRAM, expandable up to 160 MB

I do not think you will be happy with *ANY* rich DE, let alone KDE.

heh, lubuntu or xubuntu then (depends on how much ram is in the mashicne)

actually KDE will work i think but you will need low-fat settings package (or turning off all special effects etc.)
Read the easy to understand, lots of pics Ubuntu manual.
Do i need antivirus/firewall in linux?

Marco's right, there's no nope of getting a Buntu DE to run here in a decent speed.
You could use the computer for experimenting in a text-only system but it will not be able to surf the web, for example.

Bringing old hardware back to life. About problems due to upgrading.

Don't use this space for a list of your hardware. It only creates false hits in the search engines.

    Unless you use Lynx, right?

But, per your original post, Kubuntu looks hopeless to me.

XP, if nLited, without service packs and that, only requires 64MB of RAM. There was a special edition of XP that came out which only required 64-MB of RAM.

Yup, there's no ubuntu version (or any other fully featured distro) for that.

Here's part one of a rather good article on low memory usage linux (it's in 3 parts):

    http://l3net.wordpress.com/2013/03/1...inux-desktops/

It may seem relatively technical, but if you want to run linux in 64Mb you're going to have to get a little technical.
