Unhappy Can't install Nvidia drivers on dual booting mac

I have looked everywhere but cannot fix my problem, if I install the nvidia drivers then my monitor will go blank during bootup (The computer is still on though) and if I don't then I can't play any games.

    I'm on an iMac with an Intel® Core™ i5-3330S CPU @ 2.70GHz × 4 processor and 8GB RAM. I have a nvidia geforce GT 640M graphics card.

I installed bumblebee and the mac boot sound played but sounded muffled, I booted into ubuntu and it froze with the screen purple. Rebooted again and the mac boot sound was normal again but this time it froze at the ubuntu logo with all five dots below red.

If bumblebee did not work, remove it.
What version of Ubuntu are you using?

I'm using Ubuntu 12.04.4 LTS. Tried to uninstall bumblebee and got 'Warning: Could not find package list for PPA: bumblebee stable' if I reboot into Ubuntu after, it still hangs with the screen purple.
