laptop freezes at power on

i have AMD A10 8gb ram/1tb hdd , dual graphics (AMD).

i installed windows 8 (not efi) than ubuntu 13.10 (not efi).
installations were successfull.

but after restart laptop freezes on purple screen(background color of grub) and OS menu arent getting displayed.

i used boot repair to purge and reinstall grub but no success.

when i booted from pendrive and selected "Boot from hardrive" it worked and i can boot into any OS i want.

I am really confused , why it freezes at normal startup ? and why it works when booted from bootable pendrive.

Please help!!

How did you install OS? From DVD or USB?
