Ubuntu 12.04 not authenticating me

I activated automatic login. After that ubuntu is not authenticating me which is required to install new apps and other things. I tried my old password and also tried empty password.

+1 because: Enabling automatic login doesn't change your user's password, ever! The problem now, putting it simply, is that you aren't remembering it correctly. As such, read the link provided in the previous post and give it a try.
