    LoCo Teams Update On Air!

    Jose Antonio Rey announces that he, Philip Ballew, Nathan Haines, and Pablo Rubianes will be hosting a monthly LoCo Teams Update session at Ubuntu on Air!. The sessions will be on the fourth Saturday of each month with the first session being on Saturday, March 22nd at 1900 UTC.

    Michael Hall: Ubuntu API Website Teardown

    Michael Hall goes through the different components of the Ubuntu API website which is "a Django project for hosting all of the API documentation for the Ubuntu SDK". The result is a development environment for folks interested in helping out with the site, and he gives contact information if there are any questions.

    KDE Applications and Development Platform February Updates Available

    The Kubuntu team announces the release of packages for KDE SC 4.12.2 and that they are available for Kubuntu 12.04 LTS, 13.10, and the current development release. The team shares where the packages can downloaded and to where bugs should be reported.

    Michael Hall: There is no "Touch", only "Ubuntu"

    Michael Hall reminds the community that despite initially referring to phone and tablet versions of Ubuntu as "Ubuntu Touch", all versions are still only called Ubuntu. Versions don't differ across devices, and there is only one single OS. He clarifies that the only difference between the desktop and mobile versions is a different shell. Everything under the hood is the same on all platforms.

    Jono Bacon: Ubuntu Development Update Presentation

    Jono Bacon has posted a video of his talk from SCALE12x where he discusses the current state of Ubuntu development. He details the work that has gone into making a convergent Ubuntu including things like app insulation, the Ubuntu SDK, click packages, and the Ubuntu Developer website.

    Jono Bacon: Join the Ubuntu App Showdown and Win Prizes!

    Jono Bacon writes about the next Ubuntu App Showdown which launched this week. Developers have six weeks to build a new app using the Ubuntu SDK. There are four categories, and winners in each category will win a prize. Extra points are awarded for blogging and sharing development updates using social media.

    The Design team announces the beta release of the new http://resources.ubuntu.com website. As described during the alpha release of the site in November, "This project grew from the need to separate content like case studies, news, press releases and events, from the core of the Canonical and Ubuntu sites -- and it will eventually replace much of what currently is at insights.ubuntu.com."     Inayaili de Leon Persson shares updates from the web team on some of their latest work including updates to /phone and /tablet sections of Ubuntu.com in anticipation of MWC and a recent sprint in Cape Town, South Africa.     Can these smartphone firms take on the big guys?

    Kiran Moodley of CNBC writes about the innovations coming out of Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and quotes Canonical's Jane Silber: "There has to be a window of disruption and opportunity," she said. "We think there's absolutely room for another player here...and there is real demand from OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) and operators for another option. They are increasingly pressured in an all-Android world and they don't have access to the Apple world." The report then goes into the software focus, price point of the proposed phones, and more.

    Unity 8 Desktop Preview Session Available In Ubuntu 14.04

    Joey-Elijah Sneddon of OMG! Ubuntu! shares the news that you are now able to log in to a preview of the Unity 8 desktop with Mir in the latest builds of 14.04. He shares some of the current drawbacks and writes "the word 'preview' in the title is a loud, cautious warning."

    New Unity Scopes Technology Detailed by Canonical

    Joey-Elijah Sneddon of OMG! Ubuntu! writes about some of the changes being made in order to reach the goal of increasing "the breadth of discoverability through Scopes; the control users have over them; and improve the way in which data is presented through them." Joey writes that "a new 'dash toolkit' is being introduced that allows data to be displayed in new, flexible ways. For example, results for an image search would work best as large thumbnails in a carousel for browsing, while news snippets are more useful in list view, with a wider content area to display text."

    Jun Auza of TechSource writes about "8 Things We Expect from Ubuntu 14/.04 Tristy Tahr" since many people are expecting a lot of new features from the release. Among the items that Jun looks at are a new icon theme, a better boot process, deeper integration with the cloud, and an easier Ubuntu Software Center approval process.

    Windows XP User? Here's 4 Reasons to Switch to Lubuntu This April

    Joey-Elijah Sneddon of OMG! Ubuntu! reminds us that Support for Windows XP officially ends on April 8, 2014 and that there are versions of Linux designed specifically to run on aging computers. Joey-Elijah informs us that Lubuntu 14.04 is free, due for release in April, and will be updated until 2017, adding "After this date you'll be given the choice to upgrade to the next major release -- again, for free!"

    Ubuntu 14.04's System Settings received volume-louder-than-100% option

    razvi of Iloveubuntu tells us that Ubuntu 14.04 will have the ability to set the output volume louder than 100%, although he says the option will be disabled by default. razvi includes some screenshots that show the new options.

    Shuttleworth says Ubuntu is sticking with MySQL

    Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols of ZDNet informs us that Mark Shuttleworth has said that Ubuntu 14.04 would include MySQL 5.6, one of the reasons being that Oracle made the effort to get it to work properly with Debian and Ubuntu. Steven also looks other distributions replacing MySQL with MariaDB.

    Romanian Edu Ministry recommends Ubuntu for schools

    Darshak Parikh of Muktware informs us that to tackle the problem of using unlicensed or unsupported versions of Microsoft Windows and Office, the Education Ministry of Romania recommends either purchasing newer, licensed copies of the software or using GNU/Linux particularly Ubuntu and Edubuntu.
