    Compiz & Ubuntu

I just wanted to know how relevant the Compiz development still is under Ubuntu. I am one of the people who enjoy bling (love to show off with the Windows users) but it appears as if there is less happening with Compiz lately. One of the plugins for Compiz was to select extra effects with windows like burning effect or paper plane flying away when closing a window - I do not see this extra plugin package as a package on the repos anymore...

I would really be sorry to see Compiz disappear into obscurity.

    Regards,
    Phill

what do you mean? i believe it is still in repos.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compiz

besides there is always Kwin for the bling.

Unity is a plugin for compiz, but it seems compiz stopped it's development and will not transition to wayland.
Read the easy to understand, lots of pics Ubuntu manual.

    Re: Compiz & Ubuntu

Compiz is still used for both the 12.04 LTS and the upcoming 14.04 LTS.
So Ubuntu will use it for at least 5 years.
I think they combined the plugins-extra into the normal plugins.
(Or something like that, or to that effect)

But beyond 14.04, it'll be new territory for Ubuntu, with a move over to the mir display server and stuff like that.
Who knows where compiz will still within that new structure.

Edit:Who knows where compiz will sit within that new structure.

Based upon a question I asked at a developer session on Ubuntu On-Air, MIR will replace not only Xserver but also LightDM and Compiz.

We (in Trusty Tahr) still have CompizConfiguration Settings Manager (CCSM) in the Software Centre but it lacks certain plugins. To get those we install compiz-plugins-default as well as CCSM.

After the switch to Mir and the Qt5 based Unity8, pretty much nowhere.

    Re: Compiz & Ubuntu

Compiz itself will be gone after 14.04. But let's hope that some of its functionalities will be implemented in Unity8.
