    Dell Dimension 2400

I have a ancient Dell Dimension 2400, 3.07 GHz processor with 1gig RAM and 1 gig nvidia graphics card. What previous version of Ubuntu should I install? I have tried everything from 12.05 or 12.10 to 13.10 with sluggish results. so anything from 12.10 and down you could recommend?

    Thanks

I wouldn't consider a pc with a 3GHz cpu and an nvidia card to be ancient.

Nevertheless, I would advice against installing old and unsupported releases. Instead, you could just try installing either Xubuntu or Lubuntu. Go with 12.04 since it's an LTS release, supported for 5 years.

^^ What he said. Lubuntu or Xubuntu would run great on that machine.

Lubuntu and Xubuntu will certainly run great on that machine, and are lightweight, resource-light, and have the (rather) extensive Ubuntu repositories for just about any app you can think of. I personally use MATE (a fork of GNOME 2.3), which is also lightweight, and MATE will be directly available through the repositories with Ubuntu 14.04, a good thing.

Re: Older Versions Of Ubuntu on Old Desktops

For reasons I've never fully understood, installing complex systems like KDE on something like Unity creates dependencies with packages that are already there. As a result, it is very difficult to cleanly remove the thing without playing havoc with everything else.

    This isn't a Ubuntu-only issue.

The safest way to try out something new is to boot a live CD or USB stick.

Mine is a Dell Dimension too! Only with half the RAM of your machine and an older Celeron processor. It runs Xubuntu 12.04 with wonderful speed, simplicity, and elegance. Yours would run it even faster!

Re: Older Versions Of Ubuntu on Old Desktops

I do not consider the specifications of that machine to be an obstacle to running Ubuntu 12.04 or upwards to 14.04. I am on an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.40 Ghz + 1GB Ram + 1 GB Nvidia GT220. It is running Trusty Tahr brilliantly and it is using Nouveau. Are you sure that the sluggish results are not down to a video driver problem?

    Regards.
It is a machine. It is more stupid than we are. It will not stop us from doing stupid things.

Xubuntu 12.04 LTS or Xubuntu 13.10 or
Lubuntu 13.10 (because Lubuntu 12.04 had no LTS)
