How to install java in ubuntu 13.10

I spent considerable time trying different commands to get java for Ubuntu 13.10.

Here is the terminal command which works in Ubuntu 13.10 as of 2/8/14

    sudo apt-get install icedtea-7-plugin openjdk-7-jre

Also by the way I usually use synaptic which to me is still preferable to Ubuntu Software Center. sudo apt-get install synaptic Then in synaptic search for java and mark for installation either the java 6 or java 7 jre. It will usually install the plugins as a recommended package at the same time.
