    gnome ubuntu bars and docks

    simple questions for 13.10 gnome

    1. I would like always to see my application dock (on the left). it currently autohides.

    2. I would like to have only the top panel, not the bottom panel, and have the top panel also display the computer load monitor (which currently displays itself on the bottom left).

these are really fairly traditional settings, so, this should not be too hard. alas, it's not an obvious configuration change.

(I might even like to see my apps on the top bar and remove the left dock, too, but this would be too unconventional---yes, I have a >23" monitor, so left-to-right real estate is enough. It sometimes seems that all desktop environments are chasing 8" tablet screens and 11" notebook computers, instead of large screens.)

these are really fairly traditional settings,
Really? Not so for Gnome 3 and Gnome 3 Shell. This is what is now traditional for Gnome

To get what you want you should consider alternatives such as Xubuntu and Lubuntu or even another distribution that is still keeping your preferred traditions alive.

you might want to try using the gnome classic session to see if that gets you close to what you want. Otherwise as grahammechanical mentioned you might be looking at a different distro, or even lime with mate

The Dash (aka dock) in Gnome Shell is only visible when the cursor is pushed into the upper left corner, which displays the Dash, the Overview of applications, and the workspaces.

"DashToDock", an Gnome Shell extension available at extensions.gnome.org, provides a traditional left-side dock. It can be configured to autohide or not.

Gnome Shell has no bottom panel. It has a top panel and a "message tray" area along the bottom that remains hidden until exposed by mouse cursor pressure.

Are you sure you are running Gnome? Perhaps the classic variant?

Installing and using "Gnome Tweak Tool", available in the repos, will give you aaccess to a considerable number of traditional settings.
