    Anyone from Europe ordered a System76 ?

Just wondering if any European member of this forum has ordered a System 76 laptop in the US ?
If so, what are your experiences ? Do you recommend it ? Did you have to pay extra taxes at customs ?
I live in Belgium, by the way...

Re: Anyone from Europe ordered a System76 ?

Hi, I live in Scotland. I just received a System 76 laptop yesterday, 07/02, having ordered it on 30/01. So far, I'm happy with it. It's the first time I've bought from them and the process felt very smooth.

I had to pay import duty when I signed for the parcel.

Today, I also found out about this EU-based company: http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/. You can buy computers from them with no operating system pre-installed.

    Hope this helps,
    Mehmet

I am in England, and am presently awaiting delivery of my second purchase from System 76. My first experience was just as described by Mehmet in that the delivery driver collected VAT and clearance charges at the time of delivery. However, I was today contacted by UPS (who are handling the present consignment) and invited to pay over the phone by card in advance of clearance. Either way, I expect to have to pay VAT and clearance charges on deep-sea imports. I am also very happy with the original purchase and would recommend System 76 to anyone

I live in the Netherlands, bough a Sable Complete last year. Quite happy with it.

Plan to replace my wifes iMac soon, however will purchase from pcspecialist.
Simply because they have wider hardware spectrum and shipping is cheaper.

If System 76 got they act together and opened a European outfit I may reconsider.

Re: Anyone from Europe ordered a System76 ?

I am also from the Netherlands and have bought my Gazelle Professional laptop about a year ago. Also had to deal with import duties etc, but the price I paid in the end was competative with buying a laptop local with the same system setup but with windows installed. Also you need to deal with the hassle of dual booting other OS'ses such as Ubuntu.

Since then I upgrade to Ubuntu 13.10 and plan to upgrade to 14.04 when it becomes available. I run alpha versions of ubuntu in a VirtualBox as well as Mint and Windows 8. There are some minor issues such as not be able to shutdown other then using the power button. This one came up after upgrading to 13.10. Still haven't found a way around it yet, but it hasn't had any impact on performance.

So in general I am very happy with my laptop and would recommend it to others.

UPDATE: I did a quick check on the pcspecialist site provided by another user on the laptop specifics of my current system. They are about EUR150 cheaper then having it configured and delivered by system76. OTOH you have to install and configure Ubuntu yourself without the advantage of specific drivers that you may need for your hardware setup. System76 will include these and they have their own repository from which they also supply updates when available.

Hi Mehemet I live in Glasgow and want to order a system76 laptop, can you tell me roughly what percent of the system76 advertised cost you had to pay towards import duty?

    Thanks,
    Manish
