skater-nin; Hi !
Have you tried key combo ctl+alt+f7 ?
maybe yes
Bashing-om, I don't think the OP is getting a TTY, rather he's getting Unity's command prompt that allows searching of application menus.
Skater-nin, try Alt+Tab. Although, in my experience, some applications lock it down, and don't let you switch to the desktop for some reason.
It is Alt+Tab. But in tf2 full screen you may have to try it a couple of times because sometimes it goes right back to tf2 instead of to Steam or whatever else you might have open.

CTRL+ALT+(Left or Right ARROW)
Make use of workspaces. I usally leave 1 WS for the game window only so I never have to minimize or ALT+TAB. And move right or left to use my opened applications.
if tf2 is launched from steam, hit shift+tab to bring up steam overlay, then you can move your mouse to your regular desktop.
