Set up logitech media server on ubuntu 13.10

I have a directory with subdirectories that contain music files ripped from my CDs. I have two logitech gizmos (squeezebox touch, and squeezebox radio) that can stream music off an old Windows laptop using the logitech media server (LMS). I'd like to get rid of that laptop and just use my ubuntu 13.10 machine as the music server. I have found various almost-helpful things on google but just can't make the thing work. Can someone please walk me through exactly what must be done to replace the Windows music server with the linux one?

Although I've used a VAX machine, a TRS-80, and compliled FORTRAN homework under UNIX, let's just assume that I've forgotten everything about it and am a complete noob.

P.S. I cannot believe that this question has not been answered, but nothing came up in my search for it. Apologies if I'm asking a redundant question simply because I'm no good at searching forums.
