Exclamation Java virus on the loose once more.

This article from PC mag says another virus via Java on the loose again, infecting Windows, Mac & Linux OS. Any suggestions on how to proceed? disable Java?

Maybe not disable Java completely, but set the plug-in to ask for your permission every time it wants to run.

Isn't this just hitting the same flaw?

Why do you want the JRE on your machine? Apart from applications a small minority needs -- the few and the distant -- there's no demonstrated use for it, is there? I'm sure my bias flashes like a neon sign, but why invite trouble by installing unnecessary software that everyone knows is corrupted beyond hope by hacker-friendly bugs? For my part I want nothing to do with it.

Because many applications use it? Just because you don't need it doesn't mean others don't. I can list quite a few applications that require java: netbeans, some modules of octave, some R packages, eclipse, weka, Mathematica, Matlab, IBM SPSS, etc. Granted that many of these are not in the Software Centre, but people do need and use software not provided by the ubuntu repos.

There are also some financial sites that are designed to require it.

What are they? I'd like to know so that I can avoid them. Many sites require Jscript, but don't confuse a middleware scripting language with an unrelated programming language. There's no need to accept my word for any of this. Bruce Schneier is widely regarded as an expert on security. Check out his view about Java on https://www.schneier.com and myriad other sites. Java is seriously flawed because its design philosophy invites intruders to have their way with your machine. Please don't use it or even install it on your system. Let the Windows folks have the headaches it brings. Best regards.
