dual monitors on laptop question

I have a latop that on windows i use dual monitors when i'm at home. When i'm not at home i obviously dont use dual monitors. But, with windows 8 it automatically switches between with out me having to edit the settings. Is there a version of ubuntu or any linux really that lets me do this? I dont want to have to edit settings everytime i leave the house. right now i've been forced to use linux in vmware.
