    Re: GVim(or Vim) question

    Do :syntax on

In vim you can write a .vimrc file in your home directory.

This is a simple one I use.

    Code:
    set tabstop=4
    set shiftwidth=4
    set smarttab
    set autoindent
    syntax on
I'd like to suggest that the vim package come with a default .vimrc file. Vim is not much better than a vanilla text editor without syntax highlighting.

As you can probably tell by the number of posts, I'm new to Ubuntu. Where do I go to suggest this?

    Re: GVim(or Vim) question

I have a really cool .vimrc, complete with line numbers.

Here it is if you want to use it:

    Code:
    " ****************************************************************************
    " General settings
    " ****************************************************************************
    set comments=b:#,:%,fb:-,n:>,n:)
    set formatoptions=tcro
    set ruler
    set incsearch
    set showmode
    set visualbell
    set wrapmargin=1
    set showmatch
    set ignorecase
    set showcmd
    set hlsearch
    set tw=78
    set backspace=indent,eol,start
    set laststatus=2
    set softtabstop=8
    set autoindent
    set nu!
    "color murphy

    " For spell checking
    noremap <F8> :so "~/.vim/tools/vimspell.sh %"<CR><CR>
    noremap <F7> :syntax clear SpellErrors<CR>
