I'm running 12.04.3 Precise (sorry), at the login screen I'm getting an audible massage saying welcome ect. How can this be turned off? I checked for Speakup and it's not installed any ideas?

May be you have turned on the accessibility tools ?
Now be aware that Lucid has reached end of life and you would be better off using a supported release.

10.04 (Lucid) has indeed expired; 12.04 (Precise) is LTS and should be supported for a while

It must have been a bug in the system. It reverted back to normal after several reboots. Thanks
