    Cannot install program from CD

Hi everyone !I just put Ubuntu 12.04 onto my Acer Inspire 3500. For some reason it does not reckognize the Wifi hotspot, where I usually connect to,so I tried to use a Wifi-stick to receive the signal. The problem is the installation of the sticks software(driver). The install-CD leads my up to the Linux-driver(which is a ...tar.gz -file),but I cannot install it,I simply dont know how to do it.Is there any install assistant for Ubuntu? What files are in the install CD? Specifically, what is the file format of the driver you're trying to install?

tar.gz is simply a container, like a .zip file. Ubuntu should be able to extract it. Have you tried opening it with File Roller?

You'd need to copy the *.tar.gz file to your home folder first so you can extract it. It might help to mention which make/model wireless device you have.

Its a REALTEC 11n Wireless LAN Utility, drivers on the CD for Windows or Mac or LINUX. As soon I right click the folder to extract it,a sign comes up:You are not permitted to extract....Would it help if I get a Ubuntu13 CD ?

It may be complaining because it thinks you are trying to extract to the CD filesystem -- which you can't do.

As oldos2er indicated, first copy the tar.gz file to your home directory on the hard disk -- and THEN try to do the extract.

Have done that and it works, the folder is extracted. Now I plug the USB-wireless utility in and its reckognized, but says:"Realtec...is disconnected".Where can I find all those external units which are connected to the laptop? Simple question for you,but I have no idea.

It would be a good beginning to connect to the net with wire and apply all updates (there are likely hundreds of them).
After that you can focus on the wirefree.
