    Ubuntu 13.04 no menu bar

I have lenovo thinkpad T520. Just updated to 13.04. I can see desktop icons, but no menu. I can start terminal, but I cannot close windows, move them or resize them. Also, Alt+Tab does not work. I have tried a few things, such as http://askubuntu.com/questions/28608...n-ubuntu-13-04 but no luck. Please help, I've waisted a whole day on this.

    Thanks!

P.S. Unrelated to this, my login screen is tty1 terminal, and I have to type startx to get the standard desktop. Can I solve this somehow, too? This was an old problem that appeared with my previous upgrade to 12.04.

13.04 has only a couple of weeks left of support.
You will likely be better off with a fresh install (not upgrade) of 13.10.
