If you are willing to move to Virginia there are large companies that use Linux. If you think you can get a security clearance, there are government jobs with contractors in Virginia that you could look into.
Sadly, it is still hard to find a job in IT anywhere in the US.

Use whatever OS or desktop works for you. Dual boot or use VMs if you want. Backup your computer regularly, and definitely before upgrading, partitioning, or installing an OS.
