I don't use XFCE or it's terminal but I know in the unity Terminal you can change the text colour. Could it just be black text on a black background?
Try typing the name of a program in the terminal and hitting enter. If the program starts the terminal works and I would suggest you check the settings.

Check Preferred Applications > Utilities to see what terminal is set to default. I use XFCE and there should be text (user) and a cursor visible. See Edit > Preferences in the terminal application menu if the XFCE terminal is in use X terminal UX will not display this menu.

What terminal are you using? I've noticed that if I use a gnome-terminal in an xfce session it's black-on-black unless I go to Edit -> Profile Preferences and then select the Colours tab, and uncheck the 'Use colours from system theme' box
thanks Steel
