    How to organize many icons?

I don't like to have too many launch icons in the Unity Launch bar (using Precise Ubuntu). So I put my most used app icons on the desktop. However, I'm now running out of space on the desktop. Any suggestions as to how to put the least used app icons somewhere else in order to reduce the clutter on the desktop?
    Regards,
    John

Just took a look at docky. To me it seems like an alternative to Unity. I want to keep Unity. Ideally what I need is for the Desktop to have scrolling bars allowing viewing of app icons in a Virtual Desktop. What do people think of using the Desktop Cube as an alternative?

I think the icons will appear on all work spaces when using the cube and I see that by adding the desktop icon options in the tweak tool. If that applies to the desktop launchers you have added it won't allow you add more icons on different sides of the cube . You can test this from the work-space switcher without setting up the cube. If the icons appear on all work-spaces using the switcher they will when using the cube.

So it seems that the Desktop cannot have scrolling bars allowing viewing of app icons in a Virtual Desktop and that the Desktop Cube does not do the job. Another possibility would be to have extra items on the menu displayed by right clicking on the desktop (i.e. the one with desktop functions of 'Organise desktop by name' and 'Change desktop background'). Does anyone know how that could be done?

Your programs can be accessed through the Dash (right-click the Ubuntu icon and choose Applications). Rather than litter your desktop with everything, just access your less used programs from the Dash and your most used from the Launcher.
I try to treat the cause, not the symptom. I avoid the terminal in instructions, unless it's easier or necessary. My instructions will work within the Ubuntu system, instead of breaking or subverting it. Those are the three guarantees to the helpee.

Agreed ! It works about the same as drawers. Desktop launchers are difficult to see with open applications so I assume you would have to switch work spaces to see and use them all. I could be wrong but, I don't think opening dash wouldn't take much more time .
