How to read Indic scripts in linux?

What do I need to add to the linux on my PocketBook (apart from the relevant font file, which I already have there) to get the correct display of the conjunct characters in, say, Devanagari?

I know that in windows this capability is provided by the usp10.dll, so called "Unicode Scripts Processor" library.

What is the same technology in linux world?

    Thank you in advance.

    PS
The linux in my PocketBook has v2.6.x kernel if it matters.

Interesting, do you have a link to a sample document that I could have a look at?
You think that's air you're breathing now?
