    Question 13.10 "Sounds not working KDE only shows a dummy device as present

    I have no sound in KDE, heck, I only have sound using ecasound and forcing the exact alsa device in my case "alsa,hw:0,0" anything poduces no sound. Also I can not run ecasound as a non-root user and aplay does not work at all as either root or non-root. KDE shows only a single audio device "Dummy", so it does not detemine that any audio device is present. Setting up /etc/asound.conf or .asoundrc breaks alsamixer (which is fully unmuted), but does nothing else. I'm lost for what else to do the install is clean and working with the exception of sound, which may as well not exist as far as KDE is concerned. [Note: XFCE also agrees that there is no sound card present].

    #cat /proc/asound/cards 0
    0 [PCH ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel PCH
    HDA Intel PCH at 0xfe700000 irq 44
    1 [Generic ]: HDA-Intel - HD-Audio Generic
    HD-Audio Generic at 0xfe640000 irq 45
    2 [Generic_1 ]: HDA-Intel - HD-Audio Generic
    HD-Audio Generic at 0xfe540000 irq 46

    #aplay --list-devices
    **** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
    card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: 92HD89E2 Analog [92HD89E2 Analog]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
    card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 1: 92HD89E2 Digital [92HD89E2 Digital]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
    card 1: Generic [HD-Audio Generic], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
    card 2: Generic_1 [HD-Audio Generic], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

    So we have an Intel HD audio device present (great), next lets play a simple wav file

    aplay -D hw:0,0 test.wav
    Playing WAVE 'test.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 11025 Hz, Mono
    aplay: set_params:1239: Channels count non available

    No Sound is played

    aplay test.wav
    Playing WAVE 'test.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 11025 Hz, Mono

    No Sound is played

    ecasound -i test.wav -o alsa,hw:0,0
    ************************************************** ************************
    * ecasound v2.9.0 (C) 1997-2012 Kai Vehmanen and others
    ************************************************** ************************
    (eca-chainsetup) Chainsetup "untitled-chainsetup"
    (eca-chainsetup) "rt" buffering mode selected.
    (eca-chainsetup) NOTE: using existing audio parameters -f:s16_le,1,11025 for object 'test.wav' (tried
    ... to open with -f:s16_le,2,44100).
    (eca-chainsetup) Opened input "test.wav", mode "read". Format: s16_le, channels 1, srate 11025,
    ... interleaved (locked params).
    (eca-chainsetup) Opened output "alsa", mode "write". Format: s16_le, channels 2, srate 11025,
    ... interleaved.
    - [ Connected chainsetup: "untitled-chainsetup" ] ------------------------
    - [ Controller/Starting batch processing ] -------------------------------
    - [ Engine - Driver start ] ----------------------------------------------

    - [ Engine - Processing finished ] ---------------------------------------
    - [ Controller/Batch processing finished (0) ] ---------------------------
    - [ Controller/Processing stopped (cond) ] -------------------------------
    - [ Engine exiting ] -----------------------------------------------------
    (eca-control-objects) Disconnecting chainsetup: "untitled-chainsetup".

    This plays the sound (success) so I do have an aduio card, thought I did.

    So it appears that ecasound works, but aplay does not however even this is only as root, as a normal user ecasound does not work:
    ecasound -i test.wav -o alsa,hw:0,0
    ************************************************** ************************
    * ecasound v2.9.0 (C) 1997-2012 Kai Vehmanen and others
    ************************************************** ************************
    (eca-chainsetup) Chainsetup "untitled-chainsetup"
    (eca-chainsetup) NOTE: Real-time configuration, but insufficient privileges to utilize real-time
    ... scheduling (SCHED_FIFO). With small buffersizes, this may cause audible glitches during
    ... processing.
    (eca-chainsetup) "rt" buffering mode selected.
    (eca-chainsetup) NOTE: using existing audio parameters -f:s16_le,1,11025 for object 'test.wav' (tried
    ... to open with -f:s16_le,2,44100).
    (eca-chainsetup) Opened input "test.wav", mode "read". Format: s16_le, channels 1, srate 11025,
    ... interleaved (locked params).
    ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:1667_snd_pcm_hw_open) Invalid value for card
    ERROR: Connecting chainsetup failed: "Enabling chainsetup: AUDIOIO-ALSA: Unable to open ALSA-device
    ... for playback; error: No such file or directory"

    I tried setting up /etc/asound:
    at /etc/asound.conf
    pcm.!default {
    type hw
    card 0
    device 0
    }

    ctl.!default {
    type hw
    card 0
    device 0
    }
    however if it is present I can not even run alsamixer (so I reoved it)

    But even with this present, ecasound "ecasound -i test.wav -o alsa" does not work, nor does "ecasound -i test.wav"

    alsamixer:
    Shows everything as (unmuted)

    alsamixer as a non-root user does not open (should it)
    /usr/bin/alsamixer
    cannot open mixer: No such file or directory

    Can anyone help, I've tried google and found nothing helpful.
