Not criticizing your idea of fun... but I'd rather go to the shops with my girlfriend than struggle to get an ancient computer to run Linux "just because".
Non-Linux graphical OSes, though, that's more appealing. Haiku, Syllable (might be a dead project now), AROS or KolibriOS.
I try to treat the cause, not the symptom. I avoid the terminal in instructions, unless it's easier or necessary. My instructions will work within the Ubuntu system, instead of breaking or subverting it. Those are the three guarantees to the helpee.
