    The results of lsmod. The for loop gives me:
    /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight
    2431
    4882
    Going to try the brightness and idling thing now.

    It works! Fantastic, thank you! What was the problem? Was there a conflict between two things trying to use the brightness settings at once?

    Its more like the dell backlight interface was taking precedence and was causing a problem. Perhaps related to the fact that you have a switchable graphics sub-system.
