Simple PHP editor with line numbers

I was using Notepad+ for simple editing of files transferred through FTP.

When i open for editing PHP file, "getit" program opens.

What is Linux equivalent for Notepad+?

    Thank you!

Hello and welcome to the forums.

http://alternativeto.net/ is a good resource for looking for windows-alternative software. Searching for Notepad++ brings up a list of alternative software, the top 3 of which are:
    - sublime text (I use this one, it is really good, but it is commercial software)
    - vim
    - gedit (the one that is opening automatically for you).

Also, there is a notepadqq, a linux clone of notepad++, if you are so inclined.

My preference is emacs, which has support for PHP syntax highlighting.

gedit, by the way, has a setting for displaying line numbers (Edit >> Preferences >> View), if that's your only objection to it.

I'd suggest Gedit, it's my favourite text editor for working with everything from bash and C to Javascript and PHP. A lot of the preferences are off by default but there are some that I find pretty useful and really make Gedit great.

If you go to edit -> preferences you can change many options. Some that I find useful are: displaying line numbers, setting the tab width (I find the default of 8 a bit too much), performing automatic indentation, turning off the automatic backup files, and there are many useful plugins that can be activated. The themes are pretty nice too.

I'd definitely recommend Gedit, it is far superior to Notepad++ in my opinion.

Leafpad. More akin to Notepad, but It does have line numbers as an option.

Gedit does have line numbers, but you have to turn it on. Go to Edit-->Preferences and click the box next to 'Display line numbers'.

I have to admit, I've never used Notepad++ (I'm a vim man -- but while I will say that vim is excellent, it certainly has a steep learning curve, so I won't extol its virtues here). Are there any features aside from line numbers that are missing from gedit?
