Run two instances of a program

How can I run two instances of a program?

If I try just by clicking the icon again, it says the application is already running, and won't start a second one.

If an app allows opening 2 instances (or more) then shift+click on launcher icon

That gives the same result, says application running.

    Any more ideas?

    What's the application?
    Look in the man page.

The application is PSS (Professional Security Software), version 1.0. There is no main page, just the one viewing page, except for setup pages.

    It depends on the application.
Firefox, for example, disallows multiple instances for very good reason.

    No idea what that is.

By man I mean, manual page
    eg in terminal...
    man <application>
    or
    <application> --help

Re: Run two instances of a program

If the program itself says you can't run another instance, then you can't run another instance. If you did, the program wouldn't work properly and might just crash.
I try to treat the cause, not the symptom. I avoid the terminal in instructions, unless it's easier or necessary. My instructions will work within the Ubuntu system, instead of breaking or subverting it. Those are the three guarantees to the helpee.

It's not in the Ubuntu Repositories, so it's not community-supported software.
You will need to ask the proponent project or vendor.
