Set up smb share between an old computer having smbfs and a newer one having cifs.

I want to set up a smb share between two computers, one is very old having kernel version 2.4 using smbfs. The newer computer has kernel version 3.10.4 and has cifs. I checked online which says smbfs is deprecated. Is it possible to set up a share between them? Is cifs backward compatible with smbfs?

    Thanks

What OS is installed on the old computer? On the new computer? I have *never* had a problem with sharing, where my starting point is to right-click a folder and select Sharing Options.
