Kino sees firewire camera, VLC does not.

I am trying to use Ubuntu Studio (or any version of linux for that matter) to Live Stream and not having any success. I have checked the kern.log and it shows the firewire ports, I checked the /dev and fw0 and fw1 show so I know the operating system is seeing the firewire ports (correct?). When I plug my camera in (JVC GY-DV300), kino 1.3.4 sees it but no other program does. I know I am probably missing something simple, but I am a newby to this area of linux. I am working on a non-Microsoft, non-Apple solution for a business I am trying to start.

    Thanks.

Bump/Update: Still no luck with the Firewire camera, and when I plug a USB camera in via Easycap STK1160,it shows video for about 4 seconds then gray bars.
