BSNL DataCard (LW273) Modem Tools does not work with Kubuntu

I am trying to use LW273 modem tools like SMS so that I can check my usage balance etc. It says 'Initializing' and then disappears. Also the 'Connect' button seems to be inoperable in Internet tab.

Can some one guide me what is going wrong? It has Vodafone SIM in it. I have no problems using these buttons in dual boot Windows 7 but just to check the balance to dual boot Windows 7 is over kill. Alternatively is there a way to run these alone in Wine?

Re-opened - as this thread concerns Modem Tools - rather than overheating or LED's.
