Re: Macbook Air1.1 (A1237) Wifi connected but No Internet

Please also post the outputs of :
    Code:
    apt-cache show bcmwl-kernel-source | grep Version
    dpkg -l | grep bcmwl
In the meanwhile, please try -

    1) disabling N-channel in the router if it is enabled (switch to b/g or g only mode if the router has the option to change it).
    2) changing the channel to 1 or 11 @ 2.4 GHz band in the router (is it really '100' currently??).

Also, since I have no experience with routers supporting 5.5 GHz band, please enlighten me - Are there really two different routers/access-points with same ssid or is it just one router with dual band support (2.4 and 5.5 GHz)?

If it is just one router with dual band support, try disabling the 5.5 GHz band (which means doing the same thing as point 2 above). I'm not sure if the sta driver has the capability to support 5.5 GHz band yet.

Re: Macbook Air1.1 (A1237) Wifi connected but No Internet

    The output:
    Code:
    tsb@ubuntuAir:~$ apt-cache show bcmwl-kernel-source | grep Version
    Version: 6.30.223.141+bdcom-0ubuntu2
    Version: 6.20.155.1+bdcom-0ubuntu0.0.2
    Version: 5.100.82.38+bdcom-0ubuntu6
    tsb@ubuntuAir:~$ dpkg -l | grep bcmwl
ii bcmwl-kernel-source 6.30.223.141+bdcom-0ubuntu2 Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA wireless driver source
The router is just one router with dual band support (Apple A1354).

Disabling 5.5GHz (on the router they call that "802.11a - 802.11b/g Only" mode) and setting the 2.4GHz channel to 1 lets me go online etc. I ran software update, and tried putting the router back in dual band and auto channel mode. Now it will not even connect to the wifi. Putting the router back in 2.4GHz channel 1 mode it connects fine again. I have run your script again to show the changes made by software update (this is with the internet working and router in 2.4GHz mode, but is there still a 5.5GHz network there?): http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/6490364/

Re: Macbook Air1.1 (A1237) Wifi connected but No Internet

So you are currently using the latest version of the sta driver "6.30.223.141+bdcom-0ubuntu2", which seems to be working fine as per your description. I would have suggested to purge it and install the older version "5.100.82.38+bdcom-0ubuntu6" in case the current one caused problems.

But as far as I know, the kind of problem you are having can't be overcome with any version of the sta driver. It simply can't handle 5.5 GHz band yet. Maybe its future versions would be able to, but that isn't going to happen anytime soon.

So if you need the 5.5 GHz band, I'm afraid you'll have to search the forums/net to determine which card/chip works well with it on Linux. But if the 2.4 GHz band is fine for you, I think you've got your solution.

I can't say why the scan is showing the 5.5 GHz channel even after changing it in the router. It may be a cached result, although as far as I know, the "sudo iwlist scan" shows only the live results. So may be the router is still advertising the mode, even though broadcasting/connecting only @ 2.4 GHz after the change. Probably reboot the router and the computer both after making the changes, and check it again.
(the recommended way to reboot devices like routers is to power them off after saving the changes > wait at least 20 seconds to 4 minutes > power it on again.)

Re: Macbook Air1.1 (A1237) Wifi connected but No Internet

Thanks for the help. It is great that i am able to get the laptop online

The 2.4GHz is fine for my laptop running ubuntu, but i would prefer to leave the routers 5.5GHz option on, as quite a few other devices use it. They still connect with only 2.4GHz but with reduced transfer speed. There is also a few places I would like to bring the laptop, and they have the same router, and there i do not control the router/ will not be able to switch the 5.5GHz off.

Is there not any way to have the driver/ my laptop only connect to the 2.4GHz and just ignore the 5.5GHz network, so i can leave both on in the router?

*Some versions* of the "iwlwifi" driver (for intel cards) provides a parameter which can be used to disable the 5 ghz band on the driver itself. I don't know if any other drivers provide such a parameter, but your current driver certainly doesn't have such an option.

And I don't know if there is another way to force one of the bands on the card itself.
