    Re: partial upgrade

    Never do a 'Partial Upgrade' in future.

    In Terminal run:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
    ... and post the output here.

    Please use code tag '#' to paste your output. ['Go Advanced' at bottom to get a full editor, select your output and use # to wrap the text as code], just like I've done to wrap the above commands in code.

    Re: partial upgrade

    The first 12 lines of /etc/default/grub should look like:
    Code:
    # If you change this file, run 'update-grub' afterwards to update
    # /boot/grub/grub.cfg.
    # For full documentation of the options in this file, see:
    #   info -f grub -n 'Simple configuration'

    GRUB_DEFAULT=0
    GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0
    GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true
    GRUB_TIMEOUT=3
    GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""
    Is that what yours looks like?
    I suspect you might be missing a quotation mark (") on line 11.
