system randomly uses 100% resources and locks briefly

    Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop
The system randomly bumps up almost to 100% cpu use and momentarily freezes. Screen goes dim and unresponsive for a few seconds while browsing in Firefox.
Is this a hardware problem, a Ubuntu 12.04 problem or a Firefox problem?

My system is older and I've been using Ubuntu since v. 9.04. I'm not a newbie, but I only learn what I need for my uses.
I'm running AMD Phenom 9850 64 bit with 4 GB ram

This happens at different sites and times. It doesn't last long - a few seconds, and when I have 1 or more apps running. This is a new problem, but is happening more frequently. It also is taking longer to start when recovering after screen lock.
So, I don't know what to do. Any ideas?

    Thx

Is it FireFox who taken the cpu or is it an other program? Open a terminal and type: top
Now you can see what taken the most of the cpu and memory. When you start your computer open the terminal and use this command and let it run. When you have a freeze than you click on the icon of the terminal and than you can see directly what program uses the cpu.
