Should I instead get myself Ubuntu or Lubuntu, stay with Xubuntu, go for Kubuntu or find myself something entirely different to get the most out of this system?

Your machine specs should run smoothly with all Ubuntu flavours. I think this is more a questing about your personal preferences.

I want a balance between quality and speed.

    Hi Durabys.

I agree with zKhtdyX's assessment. However, it is not complicated to dual or triple boot Ubuntu, Xubuntu and Lubuntu.

In other worlds, you may need to experiencing the distros by yourself in order to make a definitive decision.

    Just my thoughts.
    Regards.

I would say they are pretty same. You can just download them and make Live USB to try and decide. As performance, I would say no problem.

What kind of distro is Lubuntu btw..beside it having no LTS up to this date? I am looking for something that doesn't bog down my PC but also allows me to do things like play some of the older but not ancient PC games and watch HD video files.

    hi!
again, no Ubuntu flavour will "bog down" your PC with this specifications. And yes, Lubuntu does not offer a LTS version yet. Here you can find a quick overview about the Ubuntu flavours: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuFlavors

This is entirely dependent on what you are after. Best to download some ISOs, burn some disks and try them from the disk. See what works for you.

With your specs you could run any of the flavours so totally a matter or taste.

    Thanks for moving it.

I really do not have much time to test out everything.

    Including Ubuntu?

If you mean will your system handle it? Sure. An i3 and 8Gb of RAM??? Install what you like. And make it 64bit. That could run Kubuntu with Ubuntu or Windows as a virtual machine (and probably Lubuntu as another)!

You could go for all the *buntus you mention, but here is why it is such a personal thing. I have an i3 but with 4Gb of RAM, could use whatever, but I use an LTS minimal install with xfce4 desktop environment and only the applications I need. I could be running a disco with all the bells and whistles. I don't need/want that. You might.

I just want fast, pared back, stable. I have spare partitions for playing with other, interim releases and whatever else. So, bang on there what you wish. 'get the most out of this system' is completely subjective.
