I'm surprised that for an OS that is claimed to be the most popular free OS nothing seems to work out of the box like it should.

Not a support request, moved to Ubuntu, Linux, and OS Chat.
I have 6 systems running Ubuntu, with a combination of wireless and wired networking. All of it just works, without any drama. I have another 7 devices running Windows and Android, plus an Expressvu DVR and Samsung Blu-ray DVD player they all interact without any problems.
My networking hardware consists of a D-Link dual channel router, a SMC Barricade router, 5 port and 8 port switches all connected to a cable modem provided by my isp.
Four Ubuntu systems on my LAN, rock solid, easy to set up, and no drama.
No drama here, either. Ubuntu machines, Fedora machines, Windows machines, Android devices. It all behaves nicely together. Everything that is supposed to have access to my Ubuntu server does. My wife's Win 8 machine backs up to it nightly.
Gigabit wired, N900 wireless.

A thing discovered and kept to oneself must be discovered time and again by others. A thing discovered and shared with others need be discovered only the once.
This universe is crazy. I'm going back to my own.
Is it? Guess you need to be more spefific about what exactly isn't working.
Hardware is not an issue with Linux itself.
OEM driver support for Linux is the issue. No OS can use hardware for which drivers are either unavailable or shoddy.
That does present the practical problem that if you are running Linux and have certain hardware, life will be difficult. But it is not Linux that is at fault.

I think Linux is a networking dream. Far, far more flexible and easy to use than windows. I'm surprised you think otherwise.
I have had good luck except I no longer recommend Ubuntu for dialup users. I have never gotten it to work no matter how hard I tried.
