packages' upgrade process failed - not enough space on `/' partition.

    Hi

During apt-get upgrade on my ubuntu 12.04 i386 box there was not enough space to fulfill the upgrade and it failed on linux kernel upgrade (to 3.2.0-56).

Then I cleaned my / partition (I do not have /boot partition), to get 1.4GB on /.

    But installing linux-image-generic-pae linux-headers-generic-pae failed:
    ubuntu.12.04:/usr/src$ sudo apt-get install linux-image-generic-pae linux-headers-generic-pae
    .....
unable to create `/usr/src/linux-headers-3.2.0-56/include/linux/dma-attrs.h.dpkg-new' (while processing `./usr/src/linux-headers-3.2.0-56/include/linux/dma-attrs.h'): No space left on device
    .....

I searched through simillar threads, but those cases not enough space on /boot partition was the case. I do not have /boot partition. /boot is directory within /.

    I'm stuck

Below is detailed view of commands I performed.

The df shows your / at 99%.
Looks like you can delete about 20 header packages. That will free up quite a bit of space.

    Hello
If its'nt done you can suppress old headers :
sudo apt-get purge "linux-headers-3.2.0-2 *" attention the space between 2 and * is very important
    sudo apt-get purge "linux-headers-3.2.0-3 *"
    sudo apt-get purge "linux-headers-3.2.0-4 *"

After this you can vérifies with a :
    df -i

    Bye

Re: packages' upgrade process failed - not enough space on `/' partition.

    ras@noc1:~$ sudo apt-get clean
    ras@noc1:~$ sudo apt-get autoremove

You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these.
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
    linux-generic : Depends: linux-image-generic (= 3.2.0.53.63) but 3.2.0.58.69 is installed
linux-headers-generic : Depends: linux-headers-3.2.0-53-generic but it is not installed
linux-headers-generic-pae : Depends: linux-headers-3.2.0-53-generic-pae but it is not installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try using -f.

It told me to use the -f flag:

    ras@noc1:~$ sudo apt-get -f autoremove

    How did that work?

If you don't get success within a few attempts I would suggest a fresh install. You have a system which has been upgraded (at least) from 10.04, and 289 packages need update. It's a shaky foundation.
