13.10 32bit live system freezes at startup (integrity check works [all ok])

This is the first Ubuntu release since 4.10 that makes trouble.
The system freezes at "starting bridge file events into upstart" or bonjour.
Older (k)ubuntu cd images still work.
Kubuntu 13.10 freezes too. I'm stuck.


Hardware:

AsRock K7S8XE 1.00
AMD Sempron 3000+ Socket A
nVIDIA 7600 GT AGP
Hama (Twinhan) PCI DVB-T)
CMI8738
Have removed USB wifi and BT.

Edit: Kubuntu 14.04 Alpha II works again.
