9.04 is really old, i'd suggest upgrading first. none of the COD's are available to run natively in linux. i believe some have gotten them to run ok in WINE. For FPS id say america's army is really neat or AssualtCube or Nexuiz or Cube 2:Sauerbraten

    What about Metro: Last Light?

You should upgrade your Ubuntu version. Not only because no game will run at all but for security reasons.

Exactly what he said. On my own Linux Steam account, I have: Darkest Hour Europe 44-45, Half-Life, H-L Blue Shift, H-L Opposing Forces, Half-Life 2 and its Orange Box chapters, Killing Floor, Left4Dead 2, Painkiller Hell and Damnation, Red Orchestra Ostfront 41-45, Serious Sam 3, and Team Fortress. Metro: Last Light is brand-new for Linux. I know that this isn't all the Steam for Linux FPS games, too.

Besides that, there are several pretty good free shooters in the repositories. I know it isn't the game you asked about, but it isn't like there aren't good shooters available for Linux. RTS games are what is lacking, and there's the most impressive Wargame series, and a game I Kickstarted called Planetary Annihilation, a next-generation RTS which will be out for Linux next year. So I'm a pretty happy Linux games these days.

OP is interested in single player games only (i imagine this means the ones with campaign?)

how about doom 3? there is plenty older ones that work in wine. UT 2004 is not singleplayer game originally (even though it has sort of campaign...), but bots are quite good. then i think heretic 2 i salso on linux. and if i am not mistaking the Jedi knight is being ported.
Easy to understand Ubuntu manual with lots of pics: http://ubuntu-manual.org/
Do i need antivirus/firewall in linux?

i didn't catch that, he wants a "single" FPS game. Not sure if he means 1 or a single player meaning campaign. If you want a good FPS campaign then try out Serious Sam 3 BFE, or Painkiller Hell & Damnation is good as well. Serious Sam 3 BFE has controller support (xbox 360 usb) out of the box but Painkiller does not. Just an FYI

Well, upgrade first. Then buy Quake 3, and use its game files to play ioQuake 3, an updated version of the Quake 3 engine/game that has Linux support.

Also, Half-Life 2 is an amazing game. Check it out.

The Half-Life complete pack is a great way to go: http://store.steampowered.com/sub/715/

It includes every Half-Life game made to date and costs $39.99, though this collection does go on sale every once in a while.

There's also the Orange Box for $19.99, which includes just the Half-Life 2 games and Portal: http://store.steampowered.com/sub/469/

Portal is a great First person puzzler shooter game. Shame Portal 2 isn't on Linux yet, but hopefully it will be out before 2014.

Serious Sam 3 is pretty good, but is a little more old school run and gun. So it's not for every ones tastes.
