On dos laptops

You should give more info about your computer/laptop. What are the hardware specs, like RAM, CPU, Graphics, Brand, model etc.

If your laptop is so old that it isn't even running Windows 95, there is not going to be any supported version of Ubuntu that will run on it because its specs will be so low.

He could probably install the server edition and run in text-mode. Use nano for editing, alpine for email, and elinks for browsing.

Ubuntu does not install through wireless and the machine's BIOS might not allow booting from USB port or even a CD drive.

Some laptops that are sold without any preinstalled OS, in the specs list OS = DOS. Probaby OP is means that. I am only guessing here, OP has to clarify... and its probably a Netbook.
