    Touchpad not recognised - Thinkpad

When my system boots I get the following message:
No touchpad was found in this system. If the system has a touchpad, please make sure that the synaptics driver is properly installed and configured.
I have checked via Synaptic Package Manager and the driver is installed. I removed it and re-installed it new but the problem persists. I do not know how and where to configure it. I also checked in Bios to make sure it was activated, it was. Can anyone please help. I am not sure if this is a hardware or software problem but this is a brand new laptop so I hope it is software.
I am now running Kubuntu but have the same problem under Ubuntu and Mint. The machine is a Thinkpad X230 with an UltrNav touchpad using the synaptics driver.
