Is there a tool that will read the filename of an mp3, and use that to populate the metadata fields?
The specific feature I'm looking for, is making the track number the same number as the track is alphabetically.

easytag has some of that capability in preferences.
This script does the opposite of what you want: Takes the file name and parses it and fills in the ID3 tags:
