What'r your favourite non-shooter games (free)?

As the title says. There are 100s of free games listed in linux games databse (lgdb), some even released in 2013, but I can't find any reviews for them so dunno how to separate the wheat from chaff and which games to install. My favourite style of games is snes-style platformers like mario, sonic hedgehog, contra etc. (I don't want a poor-quality ripoff though.) But I don't mind trying out other genres if the games are interesting. I only don't like shooters and sims. So please recommend some games for me if you know any. Thanks.

Many good free-to-play games, check out 0AD and if you want to install Steam there are games like Dota 2 which is also free-to-play and several others...

Assaultcube is a good shooting game with q reduced violence mode function.
