What if System76 began developing 100% Open-Source/Open-Hardware GPUs?

The one downside to Linux (that I can think of) is the lack of video card/driver support. Well, suppose System76 got into manufacturing premium open-source and open-hardware graphics cards designed specifically for Linux?

Would any of you like that?

depends on if premium means GT 630, GTX 650, GTX Titan, etc. level performance

I think this would be amazing, and is actually something i've been waiting to see come about.

Yeah, that's about what I meant by premium.

R&D requires deep pockets and the ability to accept an ROI that does not come for many years.

I don't know that System76 is in that sort of position.

    Ditto,

It can't be done using proprietary chips. The financial resources needed to design and manufacture the necessary components far outstrip the capabilities of a laptop reseller like System76, or anyone else, I suspect, in Linux.

If anyone did try it, how would they recover the resources expended on the effort?

Seams silly to me this is a very small market unable to mass produce products and their pockets would therfore need to be very very deep. Deeper than most peoples in the world.

Especially if they want to produce a good quality GFX card that competes with a high end amd or nvidia.

What if there was a Kickstarter to help start it up?

You are talking about a really vast amount of money to accelerate into and merge with traffic already on the highway.

Yes, it would be a vast amount of money, but I think it could be done. It's not like they'd start off making premium cards right off the bat. I could imagine they'd start off making integrated graphics and average quality cards, and then maybe work up to premium.
