Why, can't you remove Unity while it's running? It sounds like a stupid question but it's not - if you try and remove a file that's in use, Linux just marks it to be removed when it's no longer in use.
Otherwise, a command like "cinnamon --replace" would do the trick.
I try to treat the cause, not the symptom. I avoid the terminal in instructions, unless it's easier or necessary. My instructions will work within the Ubuntu system, instead of breaking or subverting it. Those are the three guarantees to the helpee.
