    Dell Wireless 5570 HSPA+ on Kubuntu 13.04

    Hello everyone,

    I'm installing Kubuntu 13.04 on Dell Latitude E7240, and can't seem to get the WWAN device working. Apparently the device is actually something manufactured by Sierra Wireless, but I can't find any information from them either. I would presume the device is supported, as this laptop is available with Ubuntu 12.04 as well.

    Does anyone have any pointers on this?

    I don't have the newer kernel, but does this return any output ? -

    Looking more closely, I can see that a wwan0 device is being registered. Could this be the card?

    Quick update:

    1. Disabling the WWAN card from BIOS hides wwan0 and /dev/cdc-wdm0 devices, so these are probably what I'm looking for.
    2. The device is actually a Sierra Wireless AirPrime MC8805, branded as Dell Wireless 5570. Interestingly enough, basically no relevant Google hits for this device and Linux, apart from Sierra Wireless datasheets stating Linux support for this device.


    As it seems the device is however recognized, how would I go about creating a connection and/or making the device visible in the network manager applet?

    The closest device the sierra driver supports (in my 3.2.0-36 kernel) is "413c : 8133" not "413c | 81a3". Obviously the version in your kernel doesn't support that PID either, otherwise the modprobe command I gave must have returned an output.

    This device is supported by the CDC MBIM class driver, so it doesn't need any device specific entry. In theory.... But that's before we get to the long list of firmware bugs most likely present in this device, like the other Sierra Wireless MBIM devices we've encountered so far.

    See also the discussion at http://www.spinics.net/lists/netdev/msg248535.html regarding the ZLP workaround. If we can have a positive confirmation that this device need the workaround, then that is a good enough reason for me to propose enabling that workaround by default for all devices. Possible with a whitelist for devices known *not* to need it, as suggested by David Miller, initially set to the Ericsson vendor ID.


    EDIT: BTW, if you don't want to play with MBIM, then it is perfectly possible to run the device in "legacy mode" by switching to USB configuration #1. Due to another firmware bug most likely present, it is best to do this immediately after the device is detected, e.g. from an udev rule.     Note that Linux selects the MBIM configuration by default because proper USB classes are preferred over vendor specific functions. That's why you end up with cfg #2 being selected by default here instead of cfg #1

    Thanks for clarifying that bmork, I know some other drivers (b43 for example) that load without a PID entry in it, but it is the first time I got any idea of 'how'.

    Just FYI: I went on and enabled the "ZLP workaround" by default in the cdc_mbim driver. The patch should go in Linux v3.13.

    It's far too intrusive to be a candidate for stable kernel releases, but you'd probably want to try the modem again once you get a 3.13 or later kernel from your distro. Which of course will take a while - the 3.13 release is expected in January 2014. I guess that means Ubuntu 14.04, is that correct?

    the 3.13 release is expected in January 2014. I guess that means Ubuntu 14.04, is that correct?
    14.04 will be released in April 2014, so it should definitely come with the latest stable kernel.

    But I think the updates for its beta testing versions and 13.10 should provide it via repositories much earlier, maybe in February, or early March at most.
