I never, EVER want a window to pop up unexpectedly. If I'm busy working at my desk and somebody suddenly puts their face in front of mine and tells me something unrelated to my work, I get annoyed; the same applies with my computer.

I can't answer the question of "what happens if you shut down part-way through an install"; never tried it. Two theories: Either the apt-daemon will continue to run, blocking shut down of the computer until it's done (probably not a good idea); or the system will still shut down and you'll need to run "sudo dpkg --configure -a" when you next boot up.
I try to treat the cause, not the symptom. I avoid the terminal in instructions, unless it's easier or necessary. My instructions will work within the Ubuntu system, instead of breaking or subverting it. Those are the three guarantees to the helpee.
