Thanks everyone. I have installed Ubuntu and took my laptop to school today. I typed up some stuff in LibreOffice and browsed around on Firefox. I'm liking it, seems fairly easy to use and straight forward. Also my laptop gets much better battery life now.Whenever I have some more free time I will download other versions and try them out!

You say that you use it for school and I encountered this problem before so you might want to look at it. I had a cheap Lexmark printer for simple assignments and it wasn't supported at all through Linux, while a more expensive HP wasn't natively supported by could work with a little bit of toying around. I have an $80 Canon printer now that isn't natively supported, so it prints slower and I haven't tried the scanner yet.
